About the Artwork

No place had a more lasting influence on Ansel Adams than California’s Yosemite National Park. He first went there at the age of fourteen and returned almost every year for the rest of his life. Adams was fascinated with interpreting the ephemeral qualities of light and variable weather conditions, as seen here in a winter view of one of Yosemite’s most iconic rock formations, known as Half Dome. In the park, Adams came to understand the power of photographs to go beyond simple visual descriptions to convey emotions and meaning.

 Accession Number

This unique number is assigned to an individual artwork as part of the cataloguing process at the time of entry into the permanent collection.
Most frequently, accession numbers begin with the year in which the artwork entered the museum’s holdings.
For example, 2008.3 refers to the year of acquisition and notes that it was the 3rd of that year. The DIA has a few additional systems—no longer assigned—that identify specific donors or museum patronage groups.
